Fr. Patrick writes: Amazing Grace

A walk with God, Day 39: Amazing Grace

He paid a debt He did not owe; I owed a debt I could not pay. I needed someone to wash my sins away. Now I can sing a brand new song- Amazing Grace! Lord Jesus paid the debt that I could never pay. Let this be your song today as we celebrate Good Friday and remember that precious sacrifice made for our sins. Spend some time and reflect on the kind of love with which God has loved us. As undeserving as we were, He willingly paid our debt, not partly, but fully, and with His own life.

Today, as is usual of the day, we are presented with some characters through the readings- Pilate, Peter, Judas, the Chief Priests, etc. We have something to learn from the actions and/or inactions of these people, but contemplate more importantly on the main character of the passion scenes: Jesus. See the extent to which a man who was the epitome of innocence was arrested, tried, humiliated, mistreated, unjustly condemned and crucified.

None of us deserved this sacrifice, for we all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, and the wages of that sin is death. But this is the message of the Cross- that forgiveness and redemption are possible regardless of sins committed and that the soul can be delivered from despair through the mercy of God. This is the Amazing Grace that we celebrate today.

Is there any reason why you would not want to live your life for the One who sacrificed His throne, His glory, His life to save you from eternal damnation? As we continue to walk with God even after this season, let us keep relying on God’s wisdom to guide us so that we will appreciate this great love and reciprocate it by loving our neighbours.
